Drew cradled the tiny baby
against his chest, tears stinging his eyes as he looked down at his new daughter. He
gently kissed her forehead, then set her down in Ali's arms, tears spilling from his eyes.
Tears fell from Ali's eyes as she gently touched the dark curls on the
baby's head. She looked up at Drew, who was in shock, as she used her free hand to brush
the tears from his cheek, as he sat down on the edge of the bed, looking at the baby and
Ali. He leaned over and kissed Ali softly on the lips, putting his arms
around his wife and daughter as best he could. After several minutes of silence, Dr. Davis
broke in.
"Have you decided on a name?"
Drew nodded, clearing his throat, "Kayla Marie," he said, his
voice thick with emotion.
"That's beautiful," Dr. Davis agreed.
Ali smiled, resting her head in the crook of Drew's shoulder,
"Thank you."
"Congratulations," Dr. Davis said, "We need to take Mrs.
Lachey into her room right now, and check out Kayla."
Drew nodded, reluctantly handing their new daughter to a nurse, who
immediately assured Drew that they would take excellent care of Kayla. Ali closed her
eyes, a smile on her face as she laced her fingers through with Drew's as she felt the bed
begin to move down the hall. After several minutes, she felt the bed come to a stop, and
the door close, she struggled to open her eyes and sit up. Immediately, she felt Drew's
lips on her forehead, "No, baby, just rest," he ordered.
"Drew, I'm ok, just a little tired," she said, opening her
eyes.
Drew smiled at her, sitting down on the edge of the bed, "You were
so tough," he said, "I couldn't have done that."
"I will never understand how I did that Drew," Ali managed to
joke.
Drew kissed her softly, smoothing her hair back off her forehead,
"She's as beautiful as you are."
Ali smiled, "She has your mouth thought, and your eyes."
Drew beamed, "But everything else is yours," he said.
Ali fought back a yawn, entwining her fingers with Drew, "I love
you," she said sleepily, "Tell the baby that..."
Drew nodded, leaning to kiss her, "I will. I love you too
Ali..."
Once Ali was sleeping peacefully, Drew kissed her one last time and
made his way out of her room, careful not to disturb her. Following the brightly painted
signs in the hospital corridor he found himself facing a row of windows. He searched the
small cribs eagerly, and soon located the proper one. Resting his head against the plate
glass, he smiled at his sleeping daughter. Pulling out his cell phone, he dialed the first
person he thought of.
"Hello?"
"Hey mom? Its Drew."
"Drew! What is it?"
"You have a granddaughter ... ."
