Drew looked nervously at Ali, who seemed perfectly calm to him. How she could be so worry-free amazed him. He didn't know why he was so nervous. Although maybe it was excitement. Or maybe it was both. Yeah, that had to be it, he decided. They were finally going to see the baby today.
Ali flipped through the magazine, not seeing anything on the pages. Her mind was racing, was the baby ok? Was everything ok? How far along was she really? She started biting one of her nails, something she only did when she was nervous, and looked at Drew briefly as he shifted in his seat and reached for her hand.
              "Nervous?" she asked.
              "Oh yeah..you?"
"Yep...I wonder how much longer we have to wait"
"Hopefully not much longer...." Drew said, when a nurse opened the door and called Ali's name.
Ali and Drew both nearly jumped out of their seats, as they followed the nurse through a maze of hallways until she stopped and escorted them into a room.
"Put this on" she said, handing Ali a paper robe, "The doctor will be with you shortly" as she left the room.
"Well, this is it" Ali said, quickly changing into the robe as Drew paced.
"I don't see why we have to wait this long...." he complained.
"Hey, come here" Ali said, as Drew stopped pacing and walked over to where she was sitting on the edge of the bed. "You're making me more nervous pacing! Try to relax a little..." she said, putting her hand on his cheek.
"Ok, I'll try..." he agreed, as the doctor walked in.
"Hello, I'm Dr. Davis" she said, shaking hands with them, "How are you doing Mrs. Lachey?"
              "I'm fine"
              "Any problems?"
              "No, not at all"
"Great, Mr. Lachey, how are you doing?"
              "Ah..I'm fine" he said.
              "Nervous?"
              Drew laughed, "Very"
Dr. Davis smiled, "Its usually the fathers who are more nervous than the mothers, mainly because they're just observers"
"I believe it" Drew said, holding Ali's hand tightly.
"Mrs. Lachey, why don't you lie down here, and we'll do the sonogram" she said, "You can sit here" she added to Drew.
Not letting go of her hand, Drew took the chair offered, anxious to get started.
Ali fliched as the doctor put the gel on her already swollen stomach, "You're three months along, correct?"
              "Yes"
"So that puts your due date at...September 15th." she said, quickly glancing at the chart.
"Ok" Ali said, watching the screen intently.
"There we are!" Dr. Davis said suddenly, "The baby has an excellent heartbeat, and right there is the head..." she said pointing out the baby's head on the screen, to the amazement of Drew and Ali.
"Wow...." Drew managed to say, amazed.
"And here are the hands, it looks like the baby's sucking its thumb" she said, smiling.
"I didn't know they could do that before they were born" Ali said honestly.
"That and more. Towards the end of your pregnancy, the baby will become much more active than now, you'll be amazed at the change" the doctor said, as she continued to check out the baby. "Do you want to know if you're having a boy or a girl?"
Ali shook her head, "No, I'd rather be surprised"
"Me too" Drew agreed, quickly kissing his wife's cheek.
"Great! You have a very healthy active baby. I'll see you next month" Dr. Davis said, silently adding how lucky the baby was to have parents such as these. She had learned to tell who would make good parents and who would not early on in her practice. And it was evident how excited the Lacheys were and how much they already loved the baby as they watched the screen, speechless.
