HAIRSPRAY Makes It s Pittsburgh Debut With Drew Lachey 7/20-8/1

Audiences will be whisked away to 1960s Baltimore when Pittsburgh CLO presents Hairspray July 20 – August 1 at the Benedum Center. Adapted for the stage from John Water’s 1988 film, Hairspray ran on Broadway for over six years and has since become a toe-tapping hit all over the world.

Set in Baltimore in 1962, the energetic Hairspray tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a larger-than-life personality with a big ‘do and big dreams of dancing on the local “Corny Collins Show.” However, when she wins a spot on the program, Tracy must take on the show’s dancing queen and the challenge of integrating a television show, all while trying to win the heart of teen celebrity Link Larkin. Hairspray’s enthusiasm is contagious as it follows Tracy’s passionate push for fairness and acceptance in a time of change. Featuring songs such as “Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now,” “You Can’t Stop the Beat” and “Good Morning, Baltimore,” this Tony® Award-winning musical will have audiences singing and dancing all the way home.

ABOUT THE CAST

Drew Lachey (Corny Collins) comes to Pittsburgh CLO for the first time. Best known for winning ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” in 2006, he was also a member of the pop group 98 Degrees, along with his brother Nick. His film credits include “The Wisher” and “The Comebacks.” He has also appeared on television’s “As the World Turns,” “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” and “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica.” Mr. Lachey has appeared on Broadway in Rent (Mark Cohen) and Spamalot (Patsy).

Drew Lachey likes Chad’s chances on ‘Dancing’

“Dancing with the Stars” champ Drew Lachey says Chad Ochocinco will be dancing to the end on ABC’s top-rated show.

“I’ve said from the beginning that Chad would be in the top three, and I stand by my prediction,” says Lachey, 33, who won the second season with Cheryl Burke, Chad’s partner.

The three remaining celebrities dance in the finals May 24. The winner will be announced May 25.

The 1994 School for Creative & Performing Arts graduate is not concerned about the wide receiver’s slow start, ranking in the bottom half all but one week.

“The good thing is that Chad didn’t come out so strong that he didn’t have any room for improvement. So the judges and audience can see how far he has come,” he says.

Ochocinco and comedian Niecy Nash tied in second-last place last week ahead of TV mom Kate Gosselin, who was voted out Tuesday.

Lachey, who performed before large crowds with brother Nick in their band, 98°, says Ochocinco needed to acclimate himself to the show, despite playing football in a sold-out stadium.

“It’s very intimidating being on that show” watched by 20 million people, says Lachey, who recently moved back to Cincinnati with his wife, Lea, and daughter.

“He probably thought it would be easier. He’s used to moving with football pads on. He didn’t realize the lines (arm position and posture) are so important,” he says.

Ochocinco and Burke rehearsed a tango here for four days last week. They returned to Los Angeles late Saturday, so they could perform their routine today at ABC’s dress rehearsal.

The tango could be difficult for the six-time Pro Bowl pick. It’s a “smooth” dance requiring closeness and good posture, like the quickstep and foxtrot – which resulted in Chad and Cheryl’s lowest scores. He has done better with rhythm dances, such as the rumba and cha cha cha.

Yet Chad could be champ because of his athleticism, work ethic, competitive nature and partner, Lachey says. Burke, 25, has made the finals four times – and won twice – in nine seasons.

“I’m seeing progress. As long as he works hard, and listens to Cheryl Burke, he’ll do well. He’s got a decent shot,” Lachey says.

“Cheryl consistently gets her partner into the finals. She’s done it with a lot less talent than Chad – and I mean me.”

Dancing Slot Down to Three Contenders

Dancing With the Stars is one (quick)step closer to choosing a new cohost.

E! News has learned that ABC has only three serious contenders to replace the departing Samantha Harris: Melissa Rycroft, Brooke Burke and Vanessa Minnillo.

Each of the threesome has a connection to the show. Rycroft and Burke (who won the whole thing) were former contestants. Minnillo, meanwhile, is dating Nick Lachey, whose brother Drew won the disco ball trophy.

“They’re only testing those three on camera for now,” a production insider tells E! News. “The testing will happen some time next week.”

If the casting session doesn’t work out, ABC has a backup plan to “rotate past contestants” in the role as backstage interviewer, with Rycroft, Burke, Drew Lachey and Nancy O’Dell among those at the top of the list.
